New Grant Funding for Diabetic Management and Prevention

By: Barbara Vinograde, Executive Director of the Iowa City Free Medical and Dental Clinic

We are excited to announce that the Iowa City Free Clinic has been selected as a recipient of a Community Health Grant through the American Medical Association Foundation!

The Clinic’s funded project, “Diabetes Management and Prevention” will expand the scope of services provided to our patients diagnosed with diabetes and pre-diabetes. Funding allows the Clinic to contract with Johnson County Public Health to hire a half-time bilingual Health Educator Assistant.

We welcome Estefany Guido Garcia into this new position! Estefany will begin working with our patients in early June. She will assist patients in setting dietary and exercise goals, discuss successes and challenges of behavior changes and offer ongoing guidance and support.

Since the Clinic’s Case Management Program was established in 1999, thousands of patients diagnosed with chronic diseases have received services. We are very grateful for this grant opportunity, through which we will provide patients with on-site education to promote healthy lifestyles. Grant funding for “Diabetes Management and Prevention” may be renewed for two additional years.
